Dell Technologies has recently made a significant change to its work policy for its global sales team. In a new Dell memo, the company announced that starting September 30, all employees in this division are required to work from the office five days a week. This decision aims to promote collaboration and skill development among team members, creating a dynamic work environment that fosters creativity and teamwork.
Details about Dell memo:
The Dell memo emphasized that working remotely should now be the exception, not the norm. The company believes that being in the office will help employees connect more effectively with colleagues and clients. This marks a change from the previous policy, which allowed team members to work from the office only three days a week.
Dell’s leadership is clear about their expectations. All global sales employees who can physically work from a Dell office must do so five days a week. This includes not just office staff but also field representatives, who are encouraged to spend time with customers and partners. For those unable to work in an office due to specific circumstances, Dell stated they can continue working remotely, with more details expected soon.
The shift back to a five-day office workweek reflects a broader trend among tech companies. Many organizations, after allowing remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic, are now urging employees to return to the office more frequently. For example, Amazon has also announced plans to require its staff to be in the office five days a week starting next year.
Dell’s new policy is part of a larger strategy to enhance the work environment for its sales team outlined in the Dell memo. Bill Scannell and John Byrne, leaders in Dell’s global sales division, communicated that this move is intended to create a “high energy” atmosphere. They believe that in-person interactions are crucial, especially as businesses increasingly rely on artificial intelligence and digital tools.
The company has been monitoring attendance to ensure compliance with its previous hybrid model. Employees had previously been required to be in the office for only three days, but many chose to continue working remotely. Reports suggest that some offices have remained underutilized, with employees working from various locations and using video conferencing to communicate.
While the return-to-office policy aims to boost collaboration, some employees have expressed concerns. They argue that they often perform similar tasks at home and in the office, leading to questions about the necessity of daily commuting. One employee pointed out that despite the change, many of their interactions still happen over video calls due to differing time zones.
Dell’s leadership argues that as the workplace evolves, particularly with advancements in AI, the need for face-to-face interaction is becoming more important. They believe that being physically present will help teams work more efficiently and effectively. This policy comes on the heels of a major restructuring within Dell’s sales division, which aimed to modernize its operations. The company has introduced new AI-driven processes and streamlined its sales teams, which has also included significant layoffs.
Overall, Dell’s decision to mandate a full return to the office reflects a growing trend in the tech industry as stated in the Dell memo. As companies navigate the post-pandemic landscape, many are reevaluating how best to leverage their workforce for maximum productivity and innovation. Only time will tell how this shift will impact employee satisfaction and overall company performance, but for now, Dell is committed to creating a collaborative and engaging office environment for its global sales team.

Hi Team,
This sales force has a culture of winning and a reputation of outpacing the competition. We are the best in the business! That doesn't come without dedicated focus, perseverance and grit. To uphold this legacy, we must continuously work at it. To grow faster than the market and take share, we must always be sharpening our edge.
This Sales floor is a unique environment that combined high energy with a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. To harness this energy and grow skills, we believe our sales teams need to be together in the office. Additionally, our data shows that sales teams are more productive when onsite.
With that in mind, starting Monday, Sept. 30, the expectation is that ALL Global Sales team members who can work from a Dell office be onsite five days a week, regardless of role. Field sellers are expected to spend five days a week with customers and partners or in a Dell Technologies office. Field sellers who can't go into a Dell office should prioritize time spent in person with customers and partners. Remote sales team members who can't go into a Dell office should continue to work remotely. More communications pertaining to remote workers will be sent in the coming weeks.
Yes, this is a shift from current expectations. The industry and technology are moving fast, the opportunity is enormous and we need to ensure we are best positioned to seize it. We know situations will arise when you need to work remotely. This is expected, but working remotely should be the exception rather than routine. We also know many of you have organized your lives around three days in the office and you may need some time to make new arrangements.
Global Facilities will continue to assess neighborhood capacity and will address any future needs.
When we're not traveling to meet with customers and partners, we are in the office. When you step onto the Sales floor with all team members onsite, the energy is amazing — it's dynamic and fast-paced. Sales managers are actively engaged on the floor, not from a distance, providing real-time feedback, guidance and support.
Our strength lies in a culture of collaborating, winning and celebrating together. As we enter a new AI world, in-person human interaction will be more important than ever.
Let's go win, outpace the competition, seize every opportunity and take share!
Bill and John.
