The Creation of Digit360: A Game-Changing Tactile Sensor for Meta Robotic Hand
One of the major components of this project is Digit360, a specialized fingertip sensor created in partnership with GelSight. Known for its tactile sensing expertise, GelSight helped Meta develop Digit360 as a “tactile fingertip with human-like abilities.” This technology can detect multiple types of sensory information, like pressure and texture, in ways that mimic human touch. Digit360’s ability to sense even small changes in its surroundings makes it a unique addition to AI technology.
In addition to these sensory capabilities, Digit360 also features built-in AI models that process information right inside the sensor itself. Introducing Digit Plexus: A Full Hand Sensor Solution
Another major aspect of Meta’s tactile AI project is Digit Plexus, a combined hardware and software solution that integrates multiple tactile sensors into one meta robotic hand. With Digit Plexus, a meta robotic hand can gather detailed information from various fingertip sensors and send it to a main computer for processing. This capability is essential for more complex interactions and enables researchers to see how multiple sensors can work together, advancing AI to handle tasks requiring more detailed sensory input.

GelSight will manufacture and distribute Digit360 sensors, which should be available for researchers sometime next year. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Wonik Robotics is taking charge of developing a fully integrated meta robotic hand, known as the Allegro Hand. Using the Digit Plexus platform, Allegro Hand will function as a real hand complete with tactile sensors, ideal for precise handling tasks that demand sensitivity and accuracy.
Testing AI’s Ability to Collaborate: The PARTNR Benchmark
Meta wants to create AI that can work well with humans, not just as isolated tools. To achieve this goal, Meta has released PARTNR (Planning And Reasoning Tasks in humaN-Robot Collaboration). This system acts as a benchmark to measure how well AI can work with humans to complete regular household tasks. PARTNR’s purpose is to help researchers test and improve AI’s collaboration skills in real-world environments.
Developed using Meta’s virtual simulation environment Habitat, PARTNR includes 100,000 tasks set in 60 different virtual homes with over 5,800 unique objects. These tasks cover daily household activities, allowing researchers to test AI’s understanding of language and its ability to interact with a variety of items in realistic settings.

Meta’s advancements in AI tactile sensing, with tools like Digit360, Allegro Hand, and the PARTNR benchmark, show their commitment to making AI more interactive and responsive.
